CARE International – Girls' Primary Education Programme, India
In 1998, only 19 percent of girls in the Northern Indian State of Uttar Pradesh were literate, compared with average literacy rates of 42 per cent in rural areas. Patriarchal attitudes, early marriage, domestic responsibilities and poverty frequently prevented rural girls from attending school. CARE International's Girls' Primary Education Programme aimed to mobilise members of the communities, open small community schools, promote child centred and gender sensitive techniques and materials within Formal Schools and partner with local NGOs and CBOs. In 1999, TRAID donated £100,105 to Care International to establish community schools in 200 remote villages.
