Excellent Work!
Excellent Development reports back after completing three projects to bring clean water and trees to communities in Kenya with funding from TRAID.
Kithito Kya Kima - 3 Sand Dams, a School Water Tank and Tree Planting
Funding has ensured a clean secure supply of water all the year around. Nearly 40,000 people live in the Kalama location of Machakos in Kenya, where the TRAID dams are sited. The dams provide an essential service in an area where lack of water is the key obstacle to sustainable livelihoods. Water reserves created by the dam has enabled the community to start a vegetable and tree nursery.
Terracing is an effective soil conservation method. Napier grass is planted along the terrace to strengthen and provide fodder for grazing animals. During the 2007-8 season, 31 members of the the Kithito Kya Kima self help group dug 4,294 metres of terraces.
Water from the sand dam means that tree seedlings are germinated in nurseries so they are strong enough to be planted out successfully when the rains come. This is a key strategy for reforestation in semi-arid Africa. During 2007-8, the Kithito Kya Kima self help group planted 2,115 trees.
Utooni Youth Group - 1 Sand Dam and Tree Planting
Funding from TRAID enabled the youth group to extend and improve a dam last worked on the 1970's, significantly increasing the amount of water stored behind this dam. The dam helped the group plant 6,531 trees during 2007 - 8 and should continue to do so for anothe 30 years.
Woni Wo Tithi - School Water Tanks
Two water tanks were built bringing clean water to Kivani Secondary School, and Kavuthu Primary School. The tanks provide clean drinking water and mean that children don't have to take time out of their schooling to collect water.
